Phonebloks: The Open-Source Modular Smartphone

What if we could self-customize our phone's hardware? It might end the need for contracts and much more. Motorola's concept, Project Ara aims to provide a single universally compatible base or 'endoskeleton' where each component can be attached.

Dave Hakkensa previous Motorola and Google designer, named the project Phonebloks, which proposes an open source, modular approach to Project Ara devices. He hopes Phonebloks will reduce e-waste in the future, also making updates, repairs, and device customization easier. With initially 500 supporters, Phonebloks is now close to a million, with a YouTube pitch of over 17 million views.
