What if we could self-customize our phone's hardware? It might end the need for contracts and much more. Motorola's concept, Project Ara aims to provide a single universally compatible base or 'endoskeleton' where each component can be attached.
Dave Hakkens, a previous Motorola and Google designer, named the project Phonebloks, which proposes an open source, modular approach to Project Ara devices. He hopes Phonebloks will reduce e-waste in the future, also making updates, repairs, and device customization easier. With initially 500 supporters, Phonebloks is now close to a million, with a YouTube pitch of over 17 million views.
