Sweetie: Virtual Fight Against Child Explotation

Child exploitation, specially through the internet, is rising. Secretly located, Terre des Hommes Netherlands created Sweetie: a computer-generated 10-year-old girl, intended to catch predators in the act.

In just 10 weeks, a team of researchers with the software caught 1,000 predators. Sweetie worked with research teams of two people. One member would create a fake profile and imitate a 10-year-old girl named “Sweetie” in chat rooms, while the other collects information the customer was revealing through IM messages, later used to piece together the real identity of the predator.

After a 6 month development period, Sweetie is an advanced,
ultra-realistic 3-D CGI model of a 10-year-old Filipino girl. A programmed application can be used to control Sweetie on command. However, can this technology be used to incriminate real people when they have committed a crime against code? At least, it would deter them.
