What if surgery can be done by a doctor who is thousands of miles away? University of Alabama at Birmingham surgeons are using Google Glass to virtually perform surgery on patients on the other side of the world with the VIPAAR, or Virtual Interactive Presence in Augmented Reality.

VIPAAR is a two-way, real-time interactive video conferencing technology that allowed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brent Ponce to perform a shoulder replacement surgery at UAB Highlands Hospital. From Atlanta, Dr. Phani Dantuluri watched, talked and virtually placed his hands into the surgical field. This is a video that shows the potential for Google Glass in providing new technology interactions and benefits on unseen applications.
