After seeing how impressive 3D printing is, and how it can be made to print guns, now comes the last step: metal 3D printed guns. Solid Concepts in Austin has created the world’s first 3D Printed Metal Gun using a laser sintering process and powdered metals.
Modeled after a 1911 hadgun- its design is in public domain, the 30+ 3D printed metal parts was assembled and used to fire 50 rounds successfully. It was made using Selective Laser Sintered (SLS), with a carbon-fiber filled nylon hand grip.
The advantages of metal 3D printed metal include: less porosity issues than a cast part and better complexities than a machined part. The 3D Printed gun barrel can hod chamber pressures above 20,000 psi every time it is fired.
