Work on MOSS began in 2010 as a research project funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and the ASEE. To build robots, you just combine magnetically-coupling modules together in different configurations. Color coding guides users of each module's function, including a distance sensor for basic awareness. Modular Robotics is already hand-assembling its kits in a factory in Boulder, Colorado. Supporting their $100,000 Kickstarter campaign will let you get the kits earlier.
