UCSB: Robots that Can See Through Walls

What if we could see through walls with only WiFi? Scientists at UC Santa Barbara have developed x-ray vision for robots that can see through walls using only WiFi signal.

Professor Yasamin Mostofi has fine-tuned her research over the years and plans to equip robots with the ability of seeing through walls. The technique works by having machines work in pairs; one broadcasts wireless transmissions and another measures them at the opposite end.

Since walls and objects reduce signal strength, the receiver can distinguish between empty and occupied spaces to create an accurate map of the area. This technology can help locate people trapped by rubble after an earthquake.
