Everything is a Remix: How IP Laws Destroy Creativity

Everything is a Remix How IP Laws Destroy Creativity
Do you remember when law was created to protect people? Let's go back to those old days with the history of Intellectual Property. Kirby Ferguson shows us in this last part of his series "Everything is a Remix", how intellectual property has been corrupted to the point of stifling creativity, instead of encouraging it.

Copyrights and patents were created originally to protect the inventor and foster innovation and creativity, but somehow these past years, we has seen the reverse happening. In a country where it produces more lawyers in one year than the number produced in the entire history of Japan, there is something deeply wrong with the litigation system (not to mention the education system).

It is typical of human behavior to see faults in others other than themselves, so when we copy stuff we like from others we justify it, but we can't face it when others profit from our creations. Steve Jobs is a great example when he said that Apple is "shameless about stealing great ideas", but later threatened to "destroy Android because it is a stolen product." The situation is worst when it comes to software and patent trolls who abuse the system to gain profit.
We ale recommend watching: "Everything Is A Remix: The Elements of Creativity" and "Margaret Gould Stewart: How YouTube Thinks About Copyright".
